Biblical Parenting and Raising God Fearing Children

From the day my husband and I felt God ushering us toward parenthood, we knew we wanted to do it with intentionality. We wanted to make it our mission to raise biblically literate children who knew Jesus.

As our boys are only school-aged, we are still on that journey. However, we’ve found some things especially helpful while introducing them to Christ.

The greatest thing I can ever do for my children is be an example of the love of Jesus in their lives. Planting seeds while they’re young will help root them in the Word of God. And no matter what their life journey looks like, they’ll know who to turn to.

5 Things we do to biblical raise our children

1. We Encourage Prayer

Every night our boys say their prayers! We started this a few years ago, and it’s been one of the best decisions we could have made.

Our boys are 5 and 7, and even at this age we’ve watched their prayer lives develop. They’ve gone from praying for things like new bicycles and toys to praying for emotional support, strength, protection, family, and friends.

We encourage them to pray about anything and everything. I’ll never forget when my older son was going through a tough transition and my younger son said a prayer for him without being prompted to do so. My older son will often pray for me too. Moments like those remind us how powerful prayer really is.

2. Bible Study

More recently, we’ve started doing Bible study with the boys, and it’s been a major hit! Every two weeks, I introduce a different Bible story. We focus on the people of the Bible, their stories, and how God moved in their lives.

I usually use a kid-friendly version of the story. There are so many great children’s Bible books and free ebooks online that you can use as resources.

After the boys learn the story, we spend the next two weeks talking about it. I casually bring up the person in conversation to spark their memory and give them opportunities to talk about the Bible. We also do coloring pages and printable activities based on the story, which they absolutely love.

We’ll usually watch a few YouTube videos about the story as well. Right now, we’re loving Mineo Kids and Lego Bible Adventures. (Lego Bible Adventures can be a little mature, but if you have action-loving kids, they’ll probably enjoy it!)

It’s amazing to hear my boys talk about Noah, Jonah, and all the ways God moved in their lives.

3. Worship Music

We primarily listen to Christian music. In the car, in our home, and at church, we intentionally fill our environment with music that points back to God.

The boys each have their favorite songs that they constantly request. At this point, worship music has simply become a healthy part of our daily routine.

4. Memorizing Scripture

Every month, my husband gives the boys a new Psalm to recite before bed. Usually, the Psalm focuses on sleep, peace, or God’s protection.

For our older son, we encourage him to read the Scripture himself. For our younger son, we say the words aloud and let him repeat after us.

I don’t think we ever expected them to memorize Scripture so quickly, but they naturally began remembering it on their own. Hearing them recite the Word of God is absolutely beautiful.

5. We Don’t Hide Our Faith Walk

Our children see our walk with God.

When we’re reading our Bibles, they see it.
When we’re on our knees in prayer, they see it.
When we’re worshiping with our hands lifted, they see it.

We don’t hide our faith because it’s a part of who we are. By sharing that openly with our children, we’re laying a foundation of truth in their lives.

I hope you found something helpful and encouraging within this post. As believers, it’s so important for us to lay a biblical foundation for our children.
